PowerPivot for SharePoint: Single Server Installation

300px-Opening_crawlA long time ago, but not in a galaxy too far away…actually, just in Redmond, WA,… there was A NEW HOPE for easier PowerPivot for SharePoint installations! Smile

So hats off to the Analysis Services product team for building an easier PowerPivot for SharePoint installation by providing us with the “New Server” installation choice.    Yet, even with the easier installation steps, it is important to make sure you do the steps in the right order and have the correct prerequisites installed to make it a smooth installation experience.

From time to time I get questions from folks asking me “What is the best debugging tool for PowerPivot?” – The Answer is that there is clear cut favorite and it is EXTREMELY useful, but I didn’t know that it was released to the public. Well . . . after some investigation, it looks like it is available – not only that, it has been for a while. But better late than never . . take a look at it!

Cannot add the specified assembly to the global assembly cache

This is part of my continuing series on debugging SharePoint and PowerPivot. In this case, I do not expect any PowerPivot users to ever encounter this error in the context of PowerPivot. However, the general SharePoint developer who is in the early stages of building and testing his custom solutions might hit this and since so many people on our team have been confused by it, I thought I would throw out some help for other developers. This error is hit when trying to deploy a SharePoint solution package to the farm. It could be an ApplicationServer solution or a WebFrontEnd solution, the important part is that it has an assembly marked to be deployed to the GAC:
